Class’s drug by for the rest of the day. When the final bell rang Anthony ran for the door. Most assumed he was avoiding Richard, but all he cared about was the picture, and the flower he hoped to see restored to its pot.

Reaching his front step he came to a grinding halt.

The door was ajar.

Anthony checked the driveway, but his mother wasn’t due back for another hour. He contemplated the open door, knowing how unlikely it was that either he, or his mother, had left it ajar.

He shouldn’t go in. He should call his mom, or wait for her to come home, but what were the chances someone was actually in the house? Surely a robber would have taken the goods and gotten out as fast as possible, right?

His mind reeled as he thought of his camera sitting out on his desk, unguarded.

He slowly pushed the door open, and looked around. Nothing seemed disturbed. The TV, speakers, and Xbox were all right where they should be. If someone had broken in, they hadn’t been interested in the electronics.

Closing the door behind him, he started down the hallway. The house felt like it was on pause, waiting for their return. Silent.

Looking down the hallway, he saw his door open just a crack.

The camera!

Racing down the hall, he slammed the door open.

Unlike the movies, Richard didn’t bother with black clothing and a ski mask. He walked right in, dressed in his street clothes. Unnoticed.

Standing over Anthony’s computer, the Polaroid held in front of him, he smiled at Anthony.

“Drop that!” Anthony demanded.

“Or what?” he asked, lofting it up like a trophy. “I told you I’d see you after school. So here I am. Now, where’s your hospitality.”

Anthony took a step into the room. “Just give it back, Richard.”

“I ought to smash the damn thing right here. You just had to talk back, didn’t you? Always a smart ass, trying to talk big. But big talk doesn’t get you anywhere, does it.”

“I didn’t say anything you didn’t deserve. You’ve been bullying Jenny for the last three years. You think you’re better cause you’re bigger and stronger? You’re not. You’re just a big bully.”

“Bully, huh. Well, if I’m a bully then you’re the twerp who gets to enjoy it.”

“I said, give it back,” Anthony yelled, running into the room.

He rushed at Richard, head down, trying to tackle him. Richard sidestepped him, and dashed out the door, camera still in hand, Anthony hot on his heels.

They ran down the hall, and Anthony heard the front door creek open.

Mom!

Richard didn’t pause. His mom was just another obstacle to the outdoors. He lifted the camera to use as a weapon, and his finger hit the shutter.

The room flashed, and his mother was gone. The Polaroid already extruding from the slot.

Richard screeched to a halt. “Where did she go? I just saw her.”

“Give me the camera, Richard!” Anthony yelled.

“Did she go for the cops or something?”

Anthony smashed into him from behind, and the camera fell out of his hands, landing with a sharp clang.
